I made this portable game console for my nephew as a Christmas present during the advent of Raspberry Pi-based game emulation. It was more an experiment than anything, but we were both pretty happy with how it came out.
This piece was the precursor to my bartop arcade cabinet builds, and runs the same software as the bartop cabinets.
That being said, it really was a Frankenstein of a project and a mess of cables. The technology and community around emulated gaming has grown so much that there are dedicated pieces of hardware created for projects of the nature now.
Fun fact - the splash screen and a modified version of the software theme are included in the base build for all RetroPie systems.
You can see the full build process of this project on my Instructables page here.
